how do you tie dye shirts without he color bleeding?

Question by jdslkjf;dsa: how do you tie dye shirts without he color bleeding?
like shirts that have white on them, how do you wash them so that the dye doesnt go into the white places ?

Answer by aliceticity
Wash them in sodium carbonate before dyeing.
Then, let the dye set overnight on the shirt while the ties are still on.
After that, wash everything with a LOT of running water. It will seem like all the dye is running away, but enough of it will be chemically bound to the shirt so that it will stay the color you want it to be. The white spaces will stay white.

Edit: And don’t put too much dye on. Capillary action will make it “bleed” around. The first color to touch an area will also be the one that binds to it.

Q&A: How do you make Tie-Dye Shirts? I need help!?

Question by <3 the Thin White Duke: How do you make Tie-Dye Shirts? I need help!?
I was planning to make some home made tie dye shirts but Google has let me down and i am unable to find a reliable source. Some guides say to use soda ash, while others said to just use salt. Most sites i found only showed you how to make different designs instead of what you will really need. If anyone could help me out that would be great!

food coloring ,don’t know if it’ll hold up in the washing machine though. It may stain other clothes, but so does rit dye.

how should i prepare Rit dye for tie-dying?

Question by Carolanne M: how should i prepare Rit dye for tie-dying?
We’re doing tie-dye today at my after school program and I’m not sure how to prepare the dye. I have Rit dye, and for some reason they gave me vinegar and salt. The instructions say just to mix the dye with hot water. What should I do with the salt and vinegar? Also, I don’t have any large buckets to use, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions. (I’d like to get this prepared before I get there so I don’t have to take up all my time with the kids).

the vinegar and salt are added to the water to help set the dye. you need some buckets or pans large enough to work in, bowls are not a good option, as they are easily spilled. if you have time or $ go to home depot or ace hardware or someplace like these stores and buy some small buckets. home depot sells 1 gallon buckets for about $ 1 each, walmart may also be an alternative.

the next time you want to tye dye, ask the parents to send in all their ice cream buckets, or at the beginning of the year, send a request home with the children, asking parents to save the buckets and send them in anytime, then store them for future use.
that is what my childrens teachers did, they asked for egg cartons, ice cream buckets, old clothes hangers and many other common house hold items, that are usually thrown out for childrens art projects.

Q&A: Getting red dye that bled off in wash off of powder blue velour?

Question by makena92504: Getting red dye that bled off in wash off of powder blue velour?
I washed a load of clothes and a pair of my daughters red fleece pajamas bled onto a pair of her powder blue velour sweat pants. It looks like pink stains. What is the best way to treat the garment to get the dye that bled onto the velour pants off? Thanks! If it was white, I could bleach it…

Best answer:

Answer by Butterfly Lover
Wash it again with color safe bleach. You may need to do it a few times, but do not dry in the dryer until the excess color is out.
