Advice on dying clothing a different color?
Question by lynsieleprosy: Advice on dying clothing a different color?
I have a white cotton blouse with some black piping, and I’d rather the shirt be like…forest green.
I’ve never used fabric dye before so I’m not really sure of the process, if it will look decent, if it will fade with time, etc.
Any experience with dyeing a whole garment one color? Tie-dye is a different story.

Much will depend on the fiber content of the fabric. Polyester is difficult to impossible to dye at home.

where can I purchase ladies’ silk and cotton clothing blanks (wholesale) that are ready-for-dyeing?
Question by silkgal: where can I purchase ladies’ silk and cotton clothing blanks (wholesale) that are ready-for-dyeing?
I’ve found one source but I’m interested in more diversity. I am not interested in polo-style shirts or T-shirts – my focus is mostly dresses and skirts. Some rayon would be OK. The items need to be PFD (prepared for dyeing) or RTD (ready to dye), ie no polyester thread used. Since most silk thread is waxed prior to stitching silk thread isn’t a good idea for dyeing, all cotton is much more reliable. I am interested in a sizeable order but as of yet I’m not ready to have my own garments factory-made. As a last resort I can hire the items made but I’m hoping to locate a reliable source. I appreciate your time in reading this. Thx!

You could start with http://wholesale.50webs.org/ for your first low minimum start up order and then once your business has grown, you could import directly from the manufacturers by using www.alibaba.com. You have to be careful at alibaba though because I was scammed on there once. Lost quite a bit.. *sigh* hmm maybe try globalsources.com instead?
Anyway good luck

In the USA, the only complete college left is NC State. However, to get an education in the complete supply chain will take many years of study. If you study garments, you get little on cotton laydowns. If you study dyeing, you get little on mass garment sewing. So get with your father and see where the biggest help would be found. You may also want to look at a great set of online courses from the College.

How do I protect clothing labels while dyeing a garment?
Question by randomleesi: How do I protect clothing labels while dyeing a garment?
I have some clothes I want to dye black but I don’t want to dye the label. For example I have a pair of pants that are faded but used to be black. There are tags around the pockets and more than one label on the inside. They are all red. How do I protect those while dyeing my pants black?
I’m using liquid black Rit dye on the clothes and I’m using the tub method. If you are familiar with dyeing on a regular basis, any tips would be appreciated.

Hi, I am not familiar with dye-ing at all, but I just thought that if you wrap the labels in sticky tape this would protect them, alternatively you could remove the label and replace it when your garment is dyed
