Why do my dark clothes change color in the washing machine?
Question by saintsvalentine: Why do my dark clothes change color in the washing machine?
Today I washed an olive green t shirt with other dark clothes. I use Woolite dark and oxyclean stain remover and cold water. The shirt came out with orange splotches all over it – like the dye had been removed somehow. None of the other garments were affected. Is this just a cheaply made shirt, or what?

oxiclean might be the problem. Dark clothes must be washed with a soap that is color fast. Like Cheer among others.

how do you avoid colors blending together when washing tie dyed shirts using RIT dye?
Question by califronia: how do you avoid colors blending together when washing tie dyed shirts using RIT dye?
when tie dying, i used RIT dye, but not the powder. we rinsed the shirts on cold in the washing machine shortly after dying them, which the directions on the bottle said was fine. the colors all melded together and made one big purple mess. how can we avoid the colors melting together on the shirts?

There are 2 ways in my opinion.
One way is to get a large bottle of vinegar, the type you use to make pickles. Put it in a bucket, or put a stopper in your kitchen sink and put it in there. Then just drop a shirt in, squeeze and ring out, then rinse it out. It helps keep the color in. Then you can wash it.
Also, you can put a stopper in your sink, fill it half way up with cold water, and add ice cubes. Then take your shirts “rinse” them out. Move them around, squeeze, etc etc. Then ring them out, and you can wash them. It does pretty much the same thing as the vinegar, but not as strong. It is up to you

Fresh Tie-Dye Washing Instructions?
Question by Jesus Freak: Fresh Tie-Dye Washing Instructions?
So I am going to tie-dye a shirt and a sheet and a bandanna in a few days. I tested the tie-dye on a shirt and let it sit for a while then rinsed it out and untied the rubber bands. It looked so good. Then I washed it and used the detergent tide with warm water in the washer. I took out the shirt after it was done with the cycle and it looked like the color of poop. Please tell me what detergent I should use or if I should do something with the shirt first. The dye is a brand called tulip. I didn’t use soda ash, but I bought some and I’m going to use it on the real shirt. Thank you.

http://www.pburch.net/dyeing/howtotiedye.shtml is a good starter. Dunno Tulip dyes, but I strongly suggest you follow their instructions.
The choice of fabric is critical for how the project turns out. Polyester, for instance, won’t dye with most home dyes (iDyePoly only, and that’s kind of iffy). Fabrics have to be scoured (washed to remove any finishing chemicals) beforehand (PFD (“prepared for dyeing” or greige goods are the exception). In the world of cottons, mercerized cottons will be much brighter after dyeing than their unmercerized relations.
See if your local library has the book, Color By Accident, and take a look at the photos. Good stuff there.
I don’t do much in the way of tie dyeing as it’s usually understood, but when I do, I usually use one of the unscented “free” detergents and washing soda for scouring, and the same detergent for the first wash or two after dyeing. I typically use fiber reactive dyes like Procion MX.

bummer. if it is white clothing with spots, i have used bleach directly to the area, sometimes you may need to use a q-tip for a small/tight spot. but you must wash or at least rinse within a few minutes. for colored clothing, try dry bleach. sorry to say. if these hints don’t work, throw them away. hope this helps.
